South Asia Delegation
The European Commission has been challenged by Lib Dem MEP Phil Bennion to spell out what the EU will do to stop American or multinational companies trying to dodge tougher factory safety laws in Bangladesh.
Dr Bennion was co-sponsor of a second resolution on action after the Rana Plaza fire disaster debated at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Thursday May 23rd.
Phil Bennion has called on both the Bangladesh government and European clothing retailers to take 'exceptional measures' to improve factory safety standards in the wake of the Rana Plaza disaster, which killed over 380 workers in Dhaka.
The West Midlands MEP, an active member of the Parliament's South Asia delegation, said: "I must express my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the hundreds of workers who tragically lost their lives in the factory collapse.
Phil Bennion and Midlands Lib Dem MPs Lorely Burt and John Hemming have backed calls at a conference in Birmingham for urgent international action to help resolve violence and disorder sweeping across Bangladesh.
The event at Birmingham Council House, organised by the Coalition of Bangladeshi Organisations in the Midlands, saw 300 people hear how the country is being brought to a standstill by protests over unfair proceedings and death sentences handed down by a government-backed tribunal prosecuting alleged war crimes.
The best way to resolve the growing crisis over war crime prosecutions in Bangladesh would be to refer all cases to an international tribunal with UN backing, the European Parliament heard today.
Liberal Democrat Euro MP Phil Bennion co-proposed the idea in an amendment to a resolution on the situation in Bangladesh debated at the European Parliament in Strasbourg today.
A peaceful election and transition process with EU observers could herald a new era in Pakistan, a European Parliament seminar with experts from across the political, aid and academic spectrum heard today.
The event, on the challenges facing Pakistan in the run-up to elections due in May, was sponsored by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) group and hosted by West Midlands Lib Dem MEP Phillip Bennion and German (FDP) MEP Alexander Lambsdorff.
