I am particularly concerned that human rights and democracy across the world are under threat, as other great powers such as China undermine democratic governments and prop up dictators. The liberal world order of free speech and democracy is under assault and the EU needs to take a more robust approach in standing up for its own values. 

I am seeking to take the leading role in formulating the EP response to the illiberal forces across the world which seek to ban political opposition and kerb freedom of speech.

Bennion hails victory in fish fight at European Parliament

Lib Dem Euro MP Phil Bennion has welcomed a historic vote by the European Parliament for sweeping reforms of European fisheries policy to end over-fishing and stop the wasteful practice of throwing thousands of tonnes of 'over quota' fish back into the sea.

  In the vote at Strasbourg, Euro MPs including Dr Bennion and the Lib Dem ALDE group backed a blueprint for reform of the EU's Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) by 502 votes to 137
